Installing GFRC

Hey Phil, do you use the screed method espoused by Brandon to get your underside smooth and level before you insert your foam? Or by hand? Are you saying that your foam is totally enveloped in concre…

Awe great! Just as I was starting to get my head around it you had to go and mention welding brackets and setting concrete. I think your next video should be on installations only. Maybe a bit on dre…

Brushing corners helps release any air pockets. Spray, brush with a wet chip brush, spray again. Regarding screeds, Buddy taught me a way to screed without touching the side walls. Although the diagram below is showing the screed for a different ap…

doesn't brushing the facecoat pull it off? What does this trick do?

To make sure we have a flat bottom to lay onto a cabinet sub-base, I wait until demolding to "screed" the bottom as dragging a screed board across the top rails can have adverse effects on your piece if you accidentally pull some facecoat off of the…

Yip, I do it similar to how Brandon has described. The only difference is that I don't use anything to hold the foam in place. My backcoat I spread in the mold in layers until I get to the desired thickness, 1" in this case. I then set the foam in p…

I drew up a diagram of a foam core example.

Phil is constructing "foam core" pieces, where the foam is completely submerged in the concrete so the slab appears to be solid, but is much lighter. Foam coring requires that you create an apparatus that holds the foam in the desired location while…

Since I've gone all GFRC, I have found the easiest way to do ctops is to use a foam core. Most my tops at 1" thick, then a 3/4" foam core and a 1/4" back coat. 2" total. For sinks, I've used steel brackets or wooden strips on the cabinet or on the w…

I wouldn't know about dressing cool, but perhaps my beard does. There is no manual or protocol for installing concrete - every project is different and provides unique challenges and opportunities. It just comes with time and experience.

Installation is determined by many factors - quite often the piece is just adhered to the cabinet itself, other times we weld a bracket that is shipped with the piece, which is installed and then the concrete is set.

Hey Ray. Up in the right hand corner search for 'Dropped edges on an island' which will take you to a discussion and some diagrams that show a process for making the underside of your c'top flatter for installing.

Where do you find the "Dropped edges on an island" topic??? Thanks , Ray

Check out Brandon's diagram under the "Dropped edges on an island" topic. Make you a screed that rides the rails of your forms. This ensures an even and consistent underneath.
